Lot 27 Celtic Crescents Woad Grinder.  Circa 1st century BC - 1st century AD. Copper-alloy, 30.78 grams. 71.74 mm. A bronze late Iron Age or Roman cosmetic mortar (woad grinder). The bow is crescent shaped and has a deep central groove, on the underside are three crescents. The centre crescent would have originally been the suspension loop. Each terminal at either end of the of the bow is in the form of a stylised animal head with large eyes, possibly bovine. Ref: Mills, Celtic & Roman Artefacts. p.96
