Rowling, J. K.; Thomas Taylor (Illus.). Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Proof cover design for Bloomsbury, June, 1997. A scarce proof sheet of the proposed illustrated wrappers, which would have accompanied one of the uncorrected, pre-publication copies of the book (approximately 200 of which were printed). A rare survivor with considerable variations from the final published version. Well-preserved, clean, bright; original fold lines at either side of spine for intended use; a few very faint handling creases and subtle staple holes at each corner. 19.5cm by 28cm
Provenance: Our vendor has kindly provided the following account of this proof sheet's history: 'I was a teacher in Cambridge during the time the Harry Potter books launched and became tremendously successful. My children bought the books and got Jo Rowling to sign them etc. I am a huge Harry Potter fan and shared my love of the books with the children I taught. I was in regular contact with Bloomsbury Publishers and Heffer's Bookstore Cambridge re the Harry Potter series. They suggested that I might want to be involved with a reading that Jo Rowling was undertaking at Heffers Bookstore during the summer of 1998. I attended this event with my class, it was great fun, a parent filmed the reading, and of course the children had their copies signed. Thomas Taylor was also at the event and he chatted with me and then gave me the mock up dust jacket and showed me his original artwork.'
