Lot 96 of 1830: Carolingian trefoil mount. A heavily gilded bronze trifoliate mount from a sword scabbard circa 9th century AD. At the centre is a raised trefoil within a circular panel. Each lobe has raised foliate decoration and there is an attachment loop in each cusp. Similar mounts are depicted in the Vivian Bible, which was presented to Charles the Bald in AD 846. 40mm, 21.2g.
