Lot 130 of 796: Medieval Staff Terminal.  Circa, 11th-12th century AD. Copper-alloy, 25.92 g, 34.18 mm. An open-work spherical head or terminal from a staff or pointer. These objects are described as sword-pommels in the London Museum Medieval Catalogue; (Ward-Perkins, 1940 pp21-26 Fig 2: 1-2) but they have more recently been identified as cross-staff heads by Bailey (Bailey, 1994: 171-5 ). They are thought to have an ecclesiastical use - possibly as a staff of office / virge.
