Lot 1051 of 217: Merovingian, a continental silver denier dating c. AD 720-750, copying an anonymous Anglo-Saxon sceatta of the Secondary Phase series O/BMC type 38. Probably struck in Northern Francia or Frisia. Obverse: bird walking right within alternating triple border (pelleted/solid/pelleted), pellets above neck and in front of head. Reverse: Parisian 'cross ancrée', pellets interspersed between arms. Very Fine, some dark areas. Extremely rare, this example apparently a variant on a known type. Diameter: 1
