Lot 50 of 184: An original b&w photograph of the total solar eclipse, 29 June 1927, taken by John Jackson under direction of Sir Frank Watson Dyson, Astronomer Royal, at Giggleswick, North Yorkshire. This image, which captures the Sun's corona and prominences, was featured in The Times newspaper the following day, 30 June, where it was captioned 'the official photograph'. This was the first total eclipse to be visible from mainland Britain for 203 years, powerfully recorded in a diary entry by Virginia Woolf,
