Lot 162 of 263: A copper alloy zoomorphic quillon from a medieval dagger. The quillon (also known as a cross-guard) was a bar of metal placed at a right angle between the blade and hilt of a sword. Its primary purpose was to protect the wielder’s hand from slipping forwards onto the blade, but could also be used to counter enemy attacks, and to get a better grip on the sword. For these reasons, quillons were also present on daggers. Length 68mm. Width of boss 9.5mm. Tang aperture diam.6mm. Weight 15.9g
