Rare Large Medieval Heraldic Mount of The Despenser Family
A very important medieval artefact, this large 14th century mount displaying the Despenser family arms has an important place in the story of English history. The mount itself is of quatrefoil-shape enclosing the Despenser arms flanked on both sides by a Dragon, above is a smaller beast laying with its head turned. The Dragons are in place as supporters to the arms. Size: 75mm x 76mm. Found near Biggleswade, Ex private collection.
The 1st Baron, Sir Hugh Despenser, Earl of Winchester (2nd Creation) was killed by the Kings forces in 1326 on the field of battle, and his son by the same name who was also involved, known as “Sir Hugh Despenser the Younger,” was taken to town and hung, drawn, and quartered as a traitor before a large crowd, having been involved in overthrowing Queen Isabell & Roger Mortimer. Sir Hugh Despencer the Younger’s second son named Edward Despencer inherited Eyworth, Bedfordshire in 1334.
Sir Hugh Despencer, 2nd Baron and son of the traitor Sir Hugh the Younger Despenser acquired the manor of Eyworth, Bedfordshire
by a settlement agreement during his father’s lifetime. There is little doubt much of the heraldic equipment, badges, and hardware belonging to his father was acquired by the traitor’s son and heir despite the fact that the rest of the properties were seized by the crown.
Note:
Despencer, Sir Hugh le, banneret (baron 1265-1326) -bore, at the battle of Falkirk 1298 and at the siege of Carlaverock 1300, argent, quarterly with, gulesa fret or over all a baston sable; [his son Sir HUGH banneret (baron 1314-1326) differenced with a label (3) azure at the first Dunstable tournament 1308.] HUGH (Earl of Gloucester) bore the same at the second Dunstable tournament 1334, and at the siege of Calais 1345-8. Pini.H', 2nd lord, also bore this at the siege of Rouen 1418.
