Carved Form, inspired by natural leaf shapes, features two delicate textures to highlight the curved structure of the leaf. Cast in bronze and mounted onto a plinth at a slight angle.
Rachel Carter works across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire and recently gained success with her work celebrating the 400 year anniversary of the Pilgrims sailing on the Mayflower. This is a unique piece by a well known local artist.
Each sculpture begins with a sketch and an idea of size and scale required. To create the hollow forms of the sculpture a negative solid core is required, made from a carved block of investment plaster.
Two types of wax are used to create the two different textures, a thick carving wax is used to hand work the smooth inner of the leaf, the outer leaf is created by melting and forming each individual nodule from a single droplet of wax.
This unique wax sculpture is transported to the foundry to be transformed into bronze using the lost wax technique, where every individual strand of wax is preserved.
The sculpture is finished with a speckled patina, given a polish of bees wax and attached onto a wooden plinth.
Care Instructions
Bronze requires very little maintenance to keep it looking great for years to come, just a light polish with a bees wax based polish is all that it needs.
